Help us campaign today for a better tomorrow!
My decision to step into the state office race was driven by a commitment to make a tangible difference. Witnessing the struggles of Moffat County firsthand, especially during discussions about the mine and power plant closures, I realized the urgent need for a voice that genuinely fights for our community's interests. It's time to shift the focus back to the people of Colorado and away from partisan agendas.
In the face of challenges and opportunities ahead for HD26 in 2025, our campaign is dedicated to addressing the most pressing issues with practical, impactful solutions. The economy stands at the forefront of our concerns. The closure of one of the state's largest power plants, soaring inflation, and lagging employment growth in Colorado demand immediate attention. Drawing on experience from my tenure in the City Council, I pledge to prioritize pro-economic growth policies and oppose legislation that burdens our community without delivering real benefits.
My name is Nathan Thomas Butler. I am 32 years old, born in Illinois, raised in Texas, and have spent most of my adult life in Colorado. I am married to my wonderfully supportive wife, Stephanie Butler, and we have two children: a 3-year-old daughter named Erin and an 11-year-old son named Kameron. After serving in the military from 2009 to 2016 as a 19 Delta Cavalry Scout, which included one tour in Afghanistan and another year in Korea, I was medically retired due to chronic physical injuries to my lower back, leaving me a 100% disabled veteran.
Since sustaining my injuries, I discovered a new lease on life through adaptive sports, bringing home dozens of medals to Craig, Colorado. My achievements span swimming, field events, wheelchair basketball, seated volleyball, and archery, competing across the country in events like the Endeavor Games and the Hartford Nationals. I have a history with the National Wheelchair Basketball Association and, just last year, established eight records in the adult open category at the Hartford Nationals after competing in six swimming and three field events.
In the wake of COVID-19, I have become dissatisfied with my role in my local community. In response, I took the initiative to manage a small social media page, now known as "The Real Craig Community Chat," which I helped grow from a few hundred to over 5,000 members. Following this, I joined the local VFW, served as the Junior Vice Commander of Post 4265, joined the School Board at Moffat County Christian Academy, and even ran a successful campaign for city council, where I served until July 2024 when I stepped down over the expedited closure of the Craig Power Plant.
Shortly after being elected to the Craig City Council, I recognized a significant gap in advocacy at both the national and state levels. It seemed to me that all our state and national politicians were prioritizing partisan politics over the people they represent. The people of District 26 deserve a representative willing to metaphorically "throw elbows" for their constituents, someone who is ready to take a stand and fight for their needs and interests.

Promoting economic development and environmental stewardship is crucial. I support enhancing passenger rail service from Denver to Craig, recognizing the potential benefits for our community. However, when it comes to energy transport, I advocate for safer, more efficient methods like pipelines over increased oil train traffic.
The transition from coal has been mishandled, impacting Northwest Colorado significantly. My goal is to ensure a smoother transition by advocating for the establishment of replacement industries before phasing out coal, rolling back unnecessary regulations, and promoting the clean coal technologies that Moffat County has pioneered.
Having grown up in Texas, I understand the complexities of border security and immigration. It's crucial to revert to policies that effectively secure our borders while addressing human trafficking and abuse. Colorado should focus on supporting legal immigration and providing assistance to legitimate asylum seekers, rather than incentivizing illegal entry.
As a disabled veteran, I have firsthand experience with government-run healthcare and see the need for reform. Opening up insurance to the free market and cutting red tape can improve healthcare affordability. Regarding women's reproductive health, I advocate for informed choices and support measures that respect both women's rights and the sanctity of life.
As a staunch supporter of constitutional carry, I believe in empowering law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and their communities. Strengthening self-defense rights and ensuring that criminals face strict penalties for gun crimes will make our society safer and more respectful.
Agriculture and ranching are the backbone of our community and essential to Northwest Colorado’s way of life. I’m committed to fighting for our farmers and ranchers, ensuring they have the resources and freedom to thrive. This means standing against overreaching regulations, supporting water rights, and safeguarding grazing lands. Our agricultural community deserves a voice that understands the challenges they face—from drought and rising costs to increasing pressures from urban interests. I will work tirelessly to protect the livelihoods of our farmers and ranchers, preserving these traditions and industries for future generations.
The experience of the 2020 election highlighted the need for cautious implementation of voting changes. Colorado's mail ballot system, developed over years, serves as a model for balancing accessibility with security. Yet, there's room for improvement, especially regarding ballot harvesting and voter roll maintenance, to ensure every election's integrity and fairness.
This campaign is about bringing real solutions to the table, fighting for the interests of HD26, and ensuring our community's voice is heard loud and clear. Together, we can tackle the challenges ahead, build a stronger economy, protect our values, and secure a brighter future for all.
